America's Test Kitchen is looking a self-motivated, dynamic individual with strong writing and analytical skills to join our Tasting and Testings team as an Assistant Editor. This role will report to the Executive Editor og Tasting & Testings (T&T). The T&T team is responsible for researching and conducting testings and writing sidebars and/or feature stories about kitchen equipment and ingredients for Cook’s Illustrated and Cook’s Country.

This position is most appropriate for the candidate with 2 to 4 years of experience writing and editing in a fast-paced journalism or publishing role, ideally digital-first; must be proficient in the kitchen. 

 

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF POSITION:

  • Research products and decide which to include.

  • Write testing protocols and run kitchen tests.

  • Analyze results.

  • Find and interview experts in the field to help interpret kitchen discoveries.

  • Write compelling copy that explain the results of the tests.

  • Develop tasting and testing ideas for future stories, sidebars, and equipment update department.

  • Become an in-house equipment and ingredient expert. Must be on top of the latest industry trends and new products.

  • Physically organize equipment and ingredients being tested; must be willing to get dirty and lift boxes.

  • Work with photography department to create story assets.

  • Work with television team to production support for equipment and ingredient segments of America’s Test Kitchen and Cook’s County television shows, radio show, and publicity appearances by our top editors, as needed.

  • Attend and contribute at editorial meetings.

  • Travel to yearly trade shows. 

  • Bonus points for SEO experience. 

 

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Excellent writing skills, with the ability to master the test kitchen’s well-established editorial voice.

  • Excellent reporting skills, including the ability to find and interview experts in a variety of fields, learn and translate specialized information for general readers. Resourcefulness and drive to investigate beyond the typical superficial story. 

  • Strong interest in food and cooking. 

  • Possesses news judgment, with the ability to synthesize knowledge, ideas, and trends. 

  • Detail-oriented, careful worker with high standards. Can tolerate precise, repetitive tasks. Methodical and logical; able to think like a scientist.

  • Able to do physical, logistical work, including lifting heavy boxes, organizing and keeping track of multiple products in a busy kitchen and in storage units.  

  • Ability to juggle a variety of editorial and kitchen tasks, remaining organized and productive in a deadline-driven team environment.

  • Flexibility during peak work periods and in order to meet deadlines.

  • Self-starter with the independence, initiative, and drive to succeed; solid problem- solving skills. 

  • Comfortable with fast-paced, changing priorities.

  • Ability to build relationships and work across multiple departments.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • BA/BS (or equivalent) in Journalism, English, or related field

  • 2+ years of experience in an editorial, publishing, or research environment.

  • Culinary degree and/or research background highly desirable.
