Senior Food Stylist

America’s Test Kitchen (ATK), a pioneering brand in food media, is seeking an experienced Senior Food Stylist to oversee food-styling operations within the photography department and to help define ATK’s visual identity across platforms. This is a rare opportunity to shape the look of a brand that reaches millions of fans across digital, television, streaming, magazines, books, social media, podcasts, and more.

Based in Boston, MA, and reporting to the Director of Photography, this new role will oversee food styling for ATK’s brands, including America’s Test Kitchen, Cook’s Illustrated, and Cook’s Country, and manage a team of food stylists. The Sr. Food Stylist will work closely with photographers, art directors, and editors to style dishes for photo shoots, ensuring that the food is visually appealing, inspiring, and true to the recipe.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead the Food Styling team, overseeing staff, freelancers, and all processes
  • Manage food styling for hundreds of in-house shoots per year
  • Set a high creative bar and develop a team that consistently delivers exceptional work
  • Set clear standards that elevate ATK’s food styling and maximize the visual appeal of recipes on camera
  • Experiment with creative and dynamic plating techniques to enhance food presentation
  • Style food effectively across media platforms, including digital, books, magazines, video
  • Develop practical workflows that leave room for creative exploration
  • Organize and pre-plan production needs and stylistic approaches for shoots
  • Select and assess food pre-shoot to ensure peak freshness and visual quality
  • Consult with key collaborators on creative needs for new projects
  • Source and purchase props (plates, bowls, utensils, linens, surfaces, etc.) as needed
  • Maintain and organize prop inventory by color, size, shape, and category
  • Coordinate with kitchen facilities for cleanliness and prop maintenance
  • Manage budgets, timelines, and resources effectively
  • Manage and mentor all members of the Food Styling team so they can reach their full creative potential
  • Inspire and create a culture of creativity, innovation, and collaboration
  • Understand competitive landscape in order to differentiate the look and feel of the ATK brand

Skills and Experience

  • 7+ years leading food-styling teams, projects, and/or professional shoots
  • An impressive portfolio that demonstrates a range of styling experiences and skills
  • A creative mind who can work with photographers and videographers to bring stories to life
  • Strong understanding of food aesthetics and scientific-preparation methods
  • Comfortable working with all types of food/cuisines
  • An exceptional eye for detail, color, and composition
  • The ability to articulate and champion a creative vision
  • Highly organized with excellent pre-preparation skills
  • Skilled in prop selection
  • Track record of building and developing high-performing creative teams
  • Expertise across all media platforms including digital, books, magazines, and marketing creative
  • A strong background in culinary arts, art direction, visual design, styling, and multimedia production
  • A proven ability to evolve established brands while honoring their history
  • Diplomatic leadership style that builds consensus while maintaining high standards
  • A passion for cooking and connecting with a home cook’s journey
  • Understanding of photography techniques, lighting, and composition
  • Awareness of new tools and technologies that could improve our work
  • Culinary arts degree preferred

This position is located in our Boston, MA, office in the Seaport district. It is the expectation that the person in this role will work a hybrid schedule of 3 days per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) in the office and 2 days per week remotely.
