America’s Test Kitchen seeks a talented Senior Editor to manage development of a variety of cookbook projects as a member of our book team. If you’re a topnotch, detail-oriented editor; an engaging writer; and have a strong knowledge of (and passion for) food and cooking, this job may be for you.

In this role, you will help to establish a vision and direction for your books, assemble and edit the manuscript, and oversee the production of the book from start to finish. In short, your responsibility is to make sure that your books are written, illustrated, and edited with the utmost care. The senior editor must be an advocate for the home cook, ensuring that the recipes are practical and clear and fulfill the vision for the book.

Specific responsibilities:

  • Develop a proposal and establish an editorial vision for each of your projects, working closely with the Editorial Director and Executive Food Editor.
  • Assemble a manuscript from a mix of existing and new material, editing to ensure material conforms to the book’s vision as well as for overall style and consistency, and writing fresh copy as needed.
  • Work closely with those in the kitchen developing recipes to track progress and understand the recipe details. Review recipes and edit their accompanying essays, going back to kitchen staff with questions on anything that is not clear.
  • Plan out and create all accompanying material such as sidebars and captions as well as a thorough introductory chapter.  
  • Take charge of the design for your books, proposing ideas for covers and communicating a workable vision for an interior design. Put together an art program and work with the photo team to ensure photo direction is conveyed well in advance. Oversee and track all photo and illustration work.  
  • Manage the production stage of the book, ensuring all the moving parts come together on schedule and on budget, and building in appropriate time for review by multiple parties, working closely with the design and production teams to maintain effective communication. Work directly with the copyeditor, proofreader, and indexer, reviewing their changes and queries and ensuring all deletions or additions are made correctly.
  • Prepare sales-related materials including TI sheets, blads, web copy, flap copy, and launch presentations.

In order to thrive in this role, you must have:

  • 5-plus years of experience in cookbook publishing or comparable editorial experience.
  • A strong and practical knowledge of food history, science, and cooking. 
  • Excellent editorial and writing skills and the ability to steer others working on a book so that their editorial work meets the necessary standards.
  • Equal parts creativity and an obsession for accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Good organizational skills and the ability to work way ahead so that all the moving parts of a book are completed on time.
  • The ability to collaborate and work with a diverse group of talent in multiple departments.
